Compulsory Basic Training
CBT Details
The CBT is your first step toward becoming a safe and legal motorcycle or scooter rider on UK roads. Whether you're 16 and riding a moped, or 17+ on a 125cc motorbike, you must complete this one-day course before you can ride solo with L plates.
The CBT is not a test, but a mandatory training course required by law for most new motorcycle and scooter riders in the UK. It ensures you can control a motorbike or scooter safely and understand how to ride on public roads. Once completed, you'll receive a CBT certificate (DL196). This is valid for two years, allowing you to ride a moped (up to 50cc) from age 16 or a motorcycle or scooter up to 125cc from age 17+. You must display L plates and you can not carry passengers or ride on motorways.
1 to 1 Training
We also offer 1 to 1 training. You will get your very own instructor for the day who will take you through the full CBT from begining to end. If this is something that you feel would benifit you then please ring to book or discuss further. Click the button bellow to call or ring Paul on 07956 935 994.
What you'll be doing
The CBT is a structured one-day course that consists of five elements:
- Introduction. After this element you'll have a good understanding of what you'll be doing and why. You'll have the knowledge to be able to choose the correct equipment and you'll also have your license & eyesight checked.
- On-Sight Training. This is where you'll learn about the motorcycle. It's controls, basic safety checks, starting & stopping the engine. You'll wheel it around getting used to the weight and balance.
- On-Sight Riding. In this element you'll get to ride the motorcycle. You'll learn some core skills & have time to practice them until we're happy that you're sfe to go out onto the public roads. You'll be practicing manoeuvres like turning, stopping, and figure eights.
- On-Road Training. This is all about Road Safety Theory & Highway Code. The esential road rules, road signs and rider positioning.
- On-Road Riding. The final part is the road ride. You'll be riding on the public roads for a minimum of 2 hours. We'll be assessing whether we think you'll be able to ride safely unsupervised.
At the end of the road ride we'll let you know if you've successfully completed the CBT course and you will receive a CBT certificate (DL196).
Your CBT certificate is valid for 2 years. If you don't pass a full motorcycle test (A1, A2, or DAS) in that time, you'll need to complete CBT again to continue riding legally.
How Long Does CBT Take?
Most CBT courses take one full day, starting in the morning and finishing in the afternoon. Some riders may need extra time depending on their progress, and that's okay — safety comes first.
